A carrier of medical malpractice insurance has dropped rates by more than a third in Cook and Will counties and nearly as much statewide.
Gov. Rod Blagojevich stood with representatives of the company, Medical Protective Inc., in Alton last week to trumpet the premium cuts.
They are, he says, proof that malpractice reform is making Illinois a more hospitable place to be a doctor.
Moreover, the good news has less to do with the law's controversial damage caps than with increased competition among insurance companies that provide malpractice policies, the governor says.
(Blagojevich signed the bill into law last year but has always insisted he opposes caps.)
